About Civilian Air Patrol South Africa

The South African Civilian Air Patrol is an organization created by a group of volunteer pilots, observers and ground support teams who identified the need for a civilian air wing in support of the general public, law enforcement agencies and the farming community. Civilian Air Patrol is not a law enforcement agency. Our objective is to fly surveillance, search & rescue and conservation flights or any other mission serving the community of South Africa. Civilian Air Patrol members will fly both proactive and reactive flights and members of the community with access to this system may therefore also request emergency aerial assistance through this platform and we will endeavor to accept and respond to these requests whenever possible. You can assist Civilian Air Patrol to increase our South African coverage by promoting our service in your community. The more members we have, the more effective we will be!
We will soon also introduce a SMS feature. This will allow community members to request an emergency response with a short SMS. The system will automatically inform Pilots in the area and pilots will then also have the ability to accept the request through SMS.

Community membership, access and benefits

To ensure that we only receive valid mission requests and that we maintain legitimate membership, community members must be nominated by current community members and approved before they will be granted access to this system and receive the Civilian Air Patrol support. Pilots can also nominate community membership and you can therefore reach out to your local aviation fraternity for a nomination. Once community members are nominated and accepted, they may logon to this platform, update personal details and request Civilian Air Patrol support. Civilian Air Patrol will endeavor to keep all detail provided during final registration confidential and will never pass this detail to anyone other than Civilian Air Patrol crew members responding to a request.

Once the community member registration and acceptance is complete, a community member may request a proactive flight (non-emergency) or a reactive (emergency) flight through this platform. Civilian Air Patrol will endeavor to respond to any of these requests provided that resources are available to fulfill the request and the response is therefore not guaranteed. In the event that a Civilian Air Patrol resource is available to respond, the flight will be conducted over the location specified during the registration process. Our system will automatically calculate the distance between your registered location and all available Civilian Air Patrol members so that only those in range will be alerted regarding the request. Your details will therefore be handed to the response team automatically so that they know where you are and to establish communication if required.

Since Civilian Air Patrol members conduct these flights completely at their own expense without any form of remuneration, it is important to eliminate false or illegitimate requests. Community members with access to this service will be removed from the service for any form of abuse or misuse and the nominating member will be notified of this conduct and Civilian Air Patrol action.

Pilot membership, access and services

To ensure that we maintain a reliable and committed Civilian Air Patrol support team, Civilian Air Patrol pilot members must be nominated by current pilot members and approved before they will be granted access to this system. The minimum requirement to join as a Civilian Air Patrol pilot member, the pilot must have a valid pilot license or higher and a minimum of 250 flying hours. An instrument rating or a night rating will be preferred but not required. Pilots will always operate within the law, be in complete control of every flight and will be the sole decision maker before and during every Civilian Air Patrol support flight. The safety of the flight, the air crew and the public on the ground will be the pilotís only concern. An observer should accompany the pilot on every Civilian Air Patrol support flight to support the pilot with navigation, possible communication with people on the ground and will be the only crew member focusing on the flight objective.

Sponsorships and Donations

Civilian Air Patrol is a non-profit organization operating completely without remuneration. Our pilots donate their time and aircraft for this valuable service completely free of charge. We will however appreciate donations to maintain and operate this platform and to buy additional equipment such as radios to communicate with the community on the ground, night vision goggles to spot suspicious activity during the night, or any other equipment to make us more efficient.
